No, we’re not talking about running for the shrimp boat. We mean the way Forrest is always turning up in the middle of things.

Some people live like that. You were in the room, or on the flight, or working for the guy, and it happened again a decade later somewhere completely unrelated. People keep telling you to write it down. The friend who’s heard how you got the job four times and still asks for the story. The nephew who doesn’t believe you. Somebody at dinner saying there’s no way that actually happened.

The ones telling you to write it down are right. The stories are there. The problem is that there are too many of them, spread across too many decades and too many unrelated chapters, with no obvious place to begin.

You don’t have to know what it means yet

The most common thing that stops people is the belief that they need to understand their own life before they can write about it. That the shape has to be clear going in.

It doesn’t work that way. For most people the shape arrives while they’re talking. You tell the story about leaving home, and then three sessions later you tell the story about the job you walked away from at forty, and it becomes obvious they’re from the same story. Events that felt random turn out to be connected.

That recognition is usually the best part of the experience, and there’s no way to get at it in advance. You get it by talking.

Our process is built for complicated lives

We work with people who have decades of material and no idea how to order it. Starting at birth and marching forward produces a chronology, which almost nobody wants to read. Through guided interviews and collaborative editing, our ghostwriters find the through-lines: the recurring themes, the turning points, the moments a reader won’t forget. Then we shape them into a book that moves.

You also don’t have to cover everything. Some clients write their whole life. Others write about one decade, or one business, or one trip.

The aim is to make what your experience meant visible on the page.
