The Real Value of a Book Isn’t in Royalties
“Can you actually make money from a book?”
It’s one of the first questions aspiring authors ask. The answer is yes, just not the way most people imagine.
Take a $28 hardcover from a traditional publisher. A standard royalty is 10% of list price, so $2.80 a copy. If you have an agent, they take 15% of that. You’re left with about $2.38.
Sell 5,000 copies, a respectable result for a nonfiction book, and you’ve earned roughly $12,000. That’s before taxes, and possibly years after you started writing.
Self-publishing improves the percentage, but bookstores still expect around 55% off retail, and printing and distribution take their share. The per-copy number grows. It rarely grows enough to change the picture.
So if royalties were the point, most books wouldn’t be worth writing. They aren’t the point.
What the Book Creates
The real returns come afterward. A strong business or nonfiction book raises speaking fees, brings in consulting work, earns board seats, and makes every sales conversation shorter. Becoming the person who wrote the book on your subject changes how people see you before you’ve said a word.
The book works less like a product and more like a credential nobody else can issue you.
In public life, the stakes are higher. For candidates, public figures, and advocates, a book does something no interview can. It gives you a few hundred uninterrupted pages to explain who you are and what you believe to people far outside your district or existing audience. Then it generates everything else: signings, podcast and television appearances, press coverage, speaking invitations. And if it hits a bestseller list even briefly, “best-selling author” follows your name into every introduction for the rest of your career.
Almost no one gets rich selling books. Plenty of people get rich, or influential, or hard to ignore, from what their book lets them do next.
